Right of the Child to Participate in His/Her Rehabilitation – assessing the child’s best interests
Child’s needs and family-oriented cooperation are an important base in children’s rehabilitation. However, child rehabilitation services have developed relatively few systematic ways to reinforce the child’s role as an active player and participant in everyday activities that are meaningful to the child in his or her development environment. Finland has been reproached by the The Committee on the Rights of the Child (CRC) for not fulfilling the rights of disabled children sufficiently. Disabled children do not have enough opportunities to express their opinions on matters concerning them. Disabled children should have the possibility to take part in their own rehabilitation process as active players.
- The LOOK project develops new tools and approaches that professionals in different fields and children with their families can use together. It produces practices that support the child’s participation, activeness and joint activeness. In addition, the project produces ways to assess the child’s best interests.
- During the LOOK project, a systematic literature search and data collection from disabled children, their close adults and therapists will be conducted. The project creates new, functional ways to involve disabled children as development partners. This information will serve as the basis for developing new practices, which will be piloted. The project will produce several trainings, seminars and publications.
